Definition of human vibration

There are different types of vibration

Vibration: Vibration occurs whenever an object moves back and forth under the impact of external or internal forces.

Human vibration: The situation where vibration acts on the human organism is referred to as "human vibration". Depending on where such vibration occurs, it is termed "whole-body vibration" or "hand-arm vibration".

Whole-body vibration: They act on the entire organism. Such vibration can be conveyed to truck operators and workers while operating industrial trucks from the driver's seat or operator platform.

Hand-arm vibration: Hand-arm vibration is transferred to the operator via the hand-arm system (e.g. during the use of hand-operated grinding or drilling machines). Experience indicates that industrial truck drivers are exposed to only negligible levels of this form of vibration.

Where does this kind of vibration occur?

Human vibration occurs anywhere people come into contact with mechanical vibration — as is the case when operating an industrial truck. However it is most important to consider exactly what trucks are being operated, in what conditions.

Analyses show that vibration associated with pedestrian controlled industrial trucks are generally not critical. The same applies for the vibration exposure of personnel operating counterbalance trucks (with super-elastic tyres) on a smooth asphalt or concrete surface.

Caution is advisable for industrial trucks with Vulkollan® tyres. These trucks are designed for interior use, and vibration limits are unlikely to be exceeded on a good quality concrete or asphalt floor. Where the truck is operated outside, or if there are a large number of joints, potholes, bumps or inclines in the area, it is advisable to take vibration measurements to ensure that the exposure action value is not exceeded.
